Democrats Will Block Motion to Vacate Against Johnson

For weeks now, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been threatening Speaker Johnson (R-LA) with a motion to vacate.

This week, she announced that she would be moving forward, forcing a vote on the motion.

That motion is likely to be defeated, as Democrat leadership has announced that it will not help Greene remove the Speaker.

Motion to Vacate

Greene announced that she would force the vote, knowing she already has a handful of GOP supporters.

She stated, “We need leaders in the House of Representatives that are going to get this done. Mike Johnson is not capable of that job.”

With the number that have stated they will back the motion to vacate, Greene would be able to remove Johnson if Dems joined the motion.

After Greene made her announcement, Democrat leadership made a counter-announcement.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA stated, "The time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Pro-Putin Republican obstruction.

“We will vote to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Motion to Vacate the Chair. If she invokes the motion, it will not succeed."

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) had also stated he would table the motion, but that would not be needed if leadership is backing Johnson.

That caucus follows Jeffries' lead, so if he says removal is not an option, Johnson will be safe.

While that may save Johnson for the remainder of this term, it does not bode well for Johnson to remain Speaker heading into the next session if, by some miracle, the GOP holds the House.

The credibility of House Republicans took a big hit with the removal of McCarthy and the chaos that ensued.

It makes it all the more important that they, at the very least, take back the Senate to give Trump some backup if he wins this presidential election.
