Trump Attorney Says Trials Just Effort to Keep Trump off Campaign Trail

The quality and timing of the cases against Donald Trump have been criticized from the outset, and not just by Trump allies.

We have seen numerous legal experts on left-leaning outlets say that some of these cases are very weak.

When you look at the timing of the cases, especially the Bragg hush-money case, it is quite easy to make the argument that the cases were crafted to hurt Trump in the election, and that is exactly what Trump’s attorneys are now claiming.

Election Interference

I have stated from the outset that of all the cases brought against Trump, the only two that really concerned me were the cases brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

And by concern, I meant that I thought the charges were crafted in a manner that could wind up with a guilty verdict that would not be reversed during the appeals process.

The one case that I have been very critical of all along was the Bragg hush-money case.

A similar case was brought against Hillary Clinton regarding the Steele dossier, and Clinton prevailed, but that did not stop Bragg from filing his case.

Trump advocates bashing the case, saying that hush money payments are not illegal, which is true, but that is not what Bragg is arguing here. He is trying to make the case that the way the payments were categorized was a crime.

In reality, cases like this are usually nothing more than a fine, penalty, back interest, and a slap on the wrist to make sure you do not do this again, not a felony that could put someone in jail for the rest of their lives.

Bragg could have gone that route, but he allowed the statute of limitations to run out on the misdemeanor, so he crafted this as a felony with some very questionable interpretations of the law.

If Trump loses this case in court, I fully expect him to win or at least have the penalties significantly downsized on appeal. I surely do not expect him to do jail time over this.

What this case will do, however, is take up two months of Trump’s time when he needs to be on the campaign trail, which was the point of defense attorney Alina Habba.

Habba told the media, “The fact that we have two courts, not one — criminal and civil — being used against one man because they cannot beat him in the polls is a disgrace to the American judicial system.

“You should not have two teams of lawyers here today. You should not even be here today, because he did nothing wrong. It is the epitome of a witch hunt.”

Attorney Chris Kise added, “Well, I think, you know, the Democrats claim that Trump is a threat to democracy.

“The real threat to democracy is the willingness to abuse the power of your office to influence what should otherwise be a free and fair election. And that’s exactly what’s going on downtown in the courtroom. I mean, look at just this week.

“You’ve got a hearing in a civil case about essentially nothing. You’ve got a criminal trial starting. And later this week, there’ll be a Supreme Court argument. All in cases that were made up specifically for the purpose of influencing the outcome of an election.”

Kise went on to say that he does even think they care about the outcome, as long as they can tie Trump up over the election season.

After listening to opening arguments by Bragg’s prosecutors, I tend to agree, as the case appears far weaker than I initially thought.

There is the added benefit that Trump is draining campaign funds to pay his legal bills, which is also taking a toll on his campaign.

Is this election interference or a rightful prosecution? I have a feeling the American people will make a very loud statement on that come November.
