South Dakota Tribal Nations Ban Kristi Noem For Supporting Trump Policies

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has been banned from numerous Tribal reservations.

While many Tribes have had issues with Noem from her early days as governor, things have never been worse than now.

Recently a statement from the Oglala Sioux Tribal president, Frank Star Comes Out, has made headlines.

Star Comes Out has big issues with the fact that Noem called the crisis at the border an “invasion.”

This was a point specifically mentioned by Star Comes Out in the recent statement.

However, Noem believes that the pushback from the Tribal leaders surrounding the topic of immigration at the southern border may have other roots.

“We’ve got some tribal leaders that I believe are personally benefiting from the cartels being there, and that’s why they attack me every day,” Noem told The Associated Press in a recent interview.

According to others, though, there is another reason for the attacks.

Alli Moran, the intergovernmental affairs officers of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, told The Hill that many in the tribe do not feel that Noem just does not “fully understand” the issue at play.

“That’s the reason why we’re banning her is because she doesn’t respect or uphold tribal sovereignty and her comments … that she made down in Winner, South Dakota at the town hall, but those are her sentiments and her thoughts of our people. And so … to protect our people, we went ahead and moved forward with these measures,” Moran said to The Hill.

While no one may be able to truly pinpoint the real reason for the ban, one thing is clear; tensions are only getting worse.

We hope that Noem is able to find some common ground between her and any of the Tribes that reside within the state she governs.
