Senator Murkowski Considering Leaving GOP

The task of taking back the Senate from Democrats may have just gotten a little more difficult.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is now considering leaving the Republican Party.

If she does leave the party and decides to caucus with Democrats, it will make the GOP's takeover of the Senate that much harder.

Done with Trump

Murkowski has been a thorn in Trump’s side since he first took office.

Murkowski started to object against Trump when the infamous “tape” came out about Trump discussing grabbing a woman by her genitals.

She refused to back Trump in the 2020 election, which then resulted in Trump backing Murkowski’s primary challenger in 2022.

Trump’s efforts fell short, as Murkowski wound up with 45.05% of the vote, followed by Trump-backed Kelly Tshibaka, who won 38.55% of the vote in an open primary.

Alaska uses ranked-choice voting, and it was Murkowski who won the general election quite easily, netting 53.7% of the vote.

Murkowski has since become an outsider of sorts in the Party, finding herself being attacked more often than not by her fellow Republicans.

To that point, she stated, “I wish that as Republicans, we had … a nominee that I could get behind. I certainly can’t get behind Donald Trump.”

When she was then asked about becoming an independent, she stated, “Oh, I think I’m very independent-minded.

“I just regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Donald Trump.”

Pressed further on the subject, she added, “I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times. Let’s just leave it at that.”

Murkowski is definitely in the “moderate” category, but that is what is needed in Alaska, as the failure of Sarah Palin to win office made apparent.

Now, I am not defending her by any means, but I am saying that if conservatives want her out of office, they are going to need to find another moderate candidate to replace her, as a hardcore MAGA candidate will not beat her with the moderate voting base of Alaska.

In the meantime, Republicans are going to have to deal with the real prospect of Murkowski possibly leaving the GOP, going independent, and caucusing with Democrats for the sole purpose of blocking Trump if he wins the White House.

If we wind up with a split Senate, just don’t be surprised if Murkowski suddenly goes independent and decides to caucus with Democrats.

Because yes, I believe she would go that far to block Trump from having unfettered control of Congress to pass legislation.
