Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas dies of cancer
It's sad news that politicians on both sides of the aisle are mourning.
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas has died.
Jackson Lee was 74 years old at the time of her death and had served her district since 1995.
Her death comes barely a month after she received the tragic diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Ever since her family shared a statement announcing her death, many have come forward to share their condolences, including Republicans like Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
Abbot took to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to share some words about Jackson Lee.
“Cecilia and I will forever remember Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. She was a proud Texan and a tireless advocate for the people of Houston. Her legacy of public service and dedication to Texas will live on,” Abbot said.
Cruz also took to X to reveal he was “deeply saddened by the passing” of his friend.
“She was a tireless advocate for Houston. I will always cherish our friendship & the laughs we shared throughout the years. Heidi & I offer our prayers and sincerest condolences to her family,” Cruz wrote in the post.
President Joe Biden also took time to share his thoughts, saying that the congresswoman was “a great American” before continuing to praise her character.
“Always fearless, she spoke truth to power and represented the power of the people of her district in Houston with dignity and grace,” Biden’s statement read.
“Her character revealed itself time and again, including in her battle against cancer. Her brilliant spirit was unbreakable. Sheila Jackson Lee is part of a long line of patriots who delivered the promise of America to all Americans,” the president continued.
