Nikki Haley Suspends Campaign After Brutal Super Tuesday Showing

Then there was one…

Nikki Haley has been hanging tough even though she was unable to get enough traction to give Donald Trump any real competition in the GOP primary.

As Super Tuesday wound down, it was clear that Haley needed to suspend her campaign, and on Wednesday, she finally did it.

Time to Go

Haley has been a bit of an enigma throughout this election.

When she first announced that she was considering running, she met with Trump, who gave her his approval to run.

My thought at the time was that Trump wanted her to run because he knew a crowded field would take votes away from DeSantis and make his race much easier.

When DeSantis became the first real contender to drop out, Haley remained standing, and I think that may have changed her attitude toward the race.

That is when she really started to attack Trump, and Trump, of course, returned the favor, so there is no love lost there now.

While Haley did respectable in the early voting states, she was never able to overcome Trump’s lead, and she got crushed on Super Tuesday, which led to her announcement that she would suspend her campaign.

She stated, "I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard. I have done it. I have no regrets. And although I will no longer be a candidate, I will not stop using my voice for the things I believe in.”

Haley did not endorse Trump on her way out, shelving her RNC loyalty pledge, having previously noted that since Trump did not sign the pledge, she was not beholden to him to support his campaign once she dropped out.

She explained, "It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him. And I hope he does that.

"This is now his time for choosing,"

My guess here is that she will attempt to get an influential position in Trump’s cabinet in exchange for her endorsement.

Trump has to do something to bring Haley and DeSantis voters back to the fold, as both groups are clearly holding a grudge against Trump for the attacks against their respective candidates.

I don’t even know if Trump can salvage DeSantis voters, but I think he might be able to lure Haley voters back with an olive branch.

But he will need to start making amends soon, as exit polls on Super Tuesday showed about half of Haley’s supporters are not willing to vote for Trump in this election.
