Jeff Jackson Steps Down from Congress to Become North Carolina's Attorney General
North Carolina's own Rep. Jeff Jackson (D-NC) is set to vacate his post in the House, embarking on a new chapter in his public service career as the state's Attorney General, effective New Year's Day, 2025.
Following a successful stint in Congress, Rep. Jeff Jackson relinquished his role to assume the position of North Carolina's Attorney General, after triumphing over Rep. Dan Bishop in the general election that took place on November 5.
Having served only one term as the first representative of North Carolina's 14th District post-redistricting, Jackson voluntarily resigned on Tuesday. This move follows his eight-year-long illustrious tenure in the state Senate.
A Transition From Congress To Attorney General
Victorious over fellow Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) in the general election that took place on November 5, Jackson is no novice to political battles or public service. In addition to his political experience, Jackson is an Afghan war veteran and has served as a National Guard attorney.
While succeeding Gov.-elect Josh Stein (D-NC), who held the attorney general position for two terms, Jackson's journey has been a testament to his commitment to serving the people of North Carolina. His new role, however, sets the stage for major political changes in the state and beyond.
Political Shifts: A Republican Trifecta on The Cards
Following Jackson's decision to step down, Republicans, via Rep.-elect Tim Moore (R-NC), claimed his old seat during the 2024 elections. In fact, the GOP is poised to control both the executive and legislative branches following President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, holding a total of 219 seats versus Democrats' 215 in the House.
In light of this and with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expected to play a lead role in promoting Trump's agenda, the GOP appears to be inching closer towards a trifecta. Trump's endorsement of Johnson for the Speaker position, set to be announced on January 3, 2025, certainly aids their cause.
The Resiliency of Public Service and Future Expectations
Jackson paved his path through service and dedication, always keeping his constituents at heart. Reflecting on his time in Congress, Jackson stated, "It has never been lost on me that the privilege of serving in Congress was granted by the people I represent."
The words of the incoming Attorney General reflect his devotion to service, "People who trusted me to listen to them, speak for them, and conduct myself with integrity." This sentiment reaffirms the sincerity of his commitment to the people of North Carolina.
Jeff Jackson's Tenacity: Forward Focus
Jackson's readiness to tackle his role as Attorney General is evidenced by his parting statement, "Now, I'm ready to serve the whole state and be their shield as Attorney General." His promise sets a strong precedent for the kind of leadership North Carolinians can expect in the years to come.
