Harris agrees to debate Trump
Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to debate former President Donald Trump, ABC News reports.
This comes after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential election and after Democratic Party leaders chose Harris to replace Biden as the party's presumptive nominee.
Now that Biden has dropped out of the running, Trump wants to debate Harris, and it appears that Harris has agreed.
But, as we will see, there appears to be a catch.
"There should be multiple debates"
As soon as it became clear that the Democratic Party is going to try to replace Biden with Harris, Trump made it known that he wants to debate Harris, and he said that he wants to do so not just once but multiple times.
CNBC reported:
Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would be willing to debate Vice President Kamala Harris multiple times if she is nominated, as expected, by the Democratic National Convention as the party’s presidential candidate.
The outlet went on to quote Trump as saying, "I would be willing to do more than one debate, actually." He added, "Yes, absolutely, I’d want to. I think if you’re in the Democratic nominee or Republican nominee, you really have an obligation to debate. So, it’s very important."
A couple problems
Before Biden dropped out of the running, he and Trump had agreed to debate each other for a second time. This second debate was scheduled to take place on ABC News on Sept. 10, 2024.
It appears that Trump and Harris will try to keep this date, but Trump has made it clear that he wants the debate to be held by Fox News rather than by what he referred to as "fake news" ABC.
Trump said:
ABC Fake News is such a joke, among the absolute WORST in the business. They try to make Crooked Joe into a brave warrior because he didn’t have the “guts” to fight it out — He quit! They then tried to make “Sleepy” look like a great President - he was the WORST, and Lyin’ Kamala into a competent person, which she is not. ABC, the home of George Slopadopolus, is not worthy of holding a Debate, of which I hope there will be many! MAGA2024
Trump has also made it clear that he will not debate Harris until Harris officially becomes the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.
Harris agrees
Now, Harris has agreed to debate Trump, but she has taken issue with Trump's conditions.
CNN reports Harris as saying:
Trump agreed to September 10 debate. Now it appears he's backpedaling, but I'm ready and I think the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on a debate stage and so I'm ready, let's go.
At the time of this writing, no formal agreement for a debate by the candidates has been reached.
