Trump fires CFPB director Rohit Chopra

On the campaign trail in 2024, Donald Trump promised to "drain the swamp." It hasn't been long into his second term yet, but that's already exactly what he's doing.

Trump's most recent effort to push out remnants of Joe Biden's administration was firing the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Rohit Chopra.

Chopra, a protégé of Democrat Seb. Elizabeth Warren, was promoted to CFPB director by President Joe Biden in 2021. The appointment was supposed to mean that Chopra would serve a five-year term in that role, but Trump had other plans.

After being fired by Trump, Chopra shared on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, that he was "grateful" to have served in his role.

Before being fired by Trump, Chopra was expected to hold the position until at least late 2026.

A source familiar with the situation reported that Chopra was fired via email.

Trump is committed to cleaning up America's immigration policies, but Chopra was not on board with that effort.

Chopra had spent much of his time during Joe Biden's term working for illegal immigrants. For example, Chopra tried to force banks to grant loans to illegal immigrants.

The now-dismissed official said at the time that the government should "not allow companies to use immigration status as an excuse for illegal discrimination."

It truly takes some wild mental gymnastics to say that not granting illegal immigrants the same rights as American citizens constitutes "illegal discrimination."

If these were the types of goals Chopra really had, then it's no wonder that Trump wanted this man out of the federal government.

Democrat Maxine Waters of California was upset about the firing. She said Chopra's firing "marks the end of an era of strong consumer protection and the beginning of a plan to end this important agency."
