Trump suggests Supreme Court will side with him on birthright citizenship

President Donald Trump is fighting to end birthright citizenship.

With help from the U.S. Supreme Court, Trump hopes to revoke the citizenship of the children born in America to illegal immigrants.

Trump’s executive order was blocked by a federal judge named John Coughenour of Seattle, who called Trump’s order “blatantly unconstitutional.”

“I’ve been on the bench for over four decades. I can’t remember another case where the question presented was as clear as this one is,” Coughenour went on.

Despite the pushback from Coughenour, Trump still believes the Supreme Court of the United States will take his side on the matter.

According to reports, Trump was asked if he expected at least five of the SCOTUS members to give him support.

Trump said yes.

“I think so, yeah. I just think we’ll end up winning in court, in the Supreme Court. I think we’re going to win that case. I look forward to winning it,” Trump said.

However, there is much speculation with Trump’s recent order as it appears to go against the direct position of the 14th Amendment -- ratified all the way back in 1868.

The 14th Amendment reads that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Trump has elaborated on why he believes birthright citizenship should be revoked.

“Birthright citizenship, if you look back at when this was passed -- made -- that was meant for the children of slaves. This was not meant for the whole world to come in and pile into the United States of America,” Trump said.

“Everybody coming in and totally unqualified people and with perhaps unqualified children. This wasn’t meant for that,” Trump continued.

The Department of Justice has also said they plan to “vigorously defend” Trump’ executive order.

“We look forward to presenting a full merits argument to the Court and to the American people, who are desperate to see our Nation’s laws enforced,” the Department of Justice went on.
