Liberals Urge Biden To Pardon All On Death Row, Including Notorious Bombers

Liberals Pressure President Biden to Commute Federal Death Sentences

Amidst the backdrop of recent electoral victories for death penalty proponents, left-wing organizations are mounting a vigorous campaign urging President Joe Biden to commute all federal death sentences, potentially marking a significant pivot in the administration's policy as Biden's term concludes.

In an urgent response to the electoral shift towards pro-death penalty rhetoric, numerous liberal groups are calling on Biden to fulfill his promise to end the federal death penalty.

The coalition, comprising hundreds of organizations aligned with Democratic ideologies, has formally petitioned the President to halt federal executions permanently. This coalition includes high-profile entities such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, alongside various faith-based groups.

Controversial Inmates and the Call for Clemency

The sweeping clemency would include inmates like Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Dylann Roof, who are among the 40 prisoners currently on federal death row. These cases have reignited debates over the moral and practical implications of capital punishment in America.

According to the petition presented, the death penalty is criticized for its arbitrary application and racial biases. The groups argue that the system disproportionately targets people of color, as evidenced by over half of federal death row inmates being from minority backgrounds.

Comprehensive Reforms Suggested in Petition

Not only does the petition call for the commutation of existing sentences, but it also urges the deauthorization of pending federal capital cases. Moreover, it proposes the dismantling of the federal execution chamber and the cessation of new death penalty prosecutions, signaling a complete overhaul of the federal capital punishment framework.

These reforms aim to prevent what many advocates see as irreversible miscarriages of justice and align federal policies with evolving public attitudes towards racial justice and human rights.

Charles Fain Lehman, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, has vocally opposed this move, highlighting a potential contradiction given the public's recent electoral support for Donald Trump, who advocates expanding the death penalty to additional crimes, including offenses committed by child rapists, drug dealers, and certain illegal migrants.

Voices from the Community and Criticisms

Rev. Sharon Risher, whose family members were victims in the Charleston church shooting, expressed that executing Dylann Roof would not aid her healing process. Her stance introduces a personal perspective to the often abstract debates surrounding the death penalty.

Meanwhile, the ACLU has launched a similar initiative, emphasizing the racial injustice inherent in the death penalty. Their petition reiterates many of the same concerns, urging Biden to act decisively to prevent further injustices.

The petitions argue that abolishing the death penalty would not only address ethical and racial disparities but also offer Biden a chance to cement a legacy of compassion and justice as his presidency nears its end.

Political and Public Backdrop to Clemency Calls

The current political climate, influenced by Trump's recent electoral gains and his clear stance on the death penalty, frames this push for clemency as a pivotal issue for Biden. Lehman’s critique points out the political and moral complexities of granting clemency during this politically charged moment.

"Joe Biden had four years to enact a mass executive clemency. He did not do it. To do it on his way out would be preposterous," Lehman commented, emphasizing the potential political backlash of such a decision.

The White House has yet to respond to the petitions and the growing public discourse surrounding them. Similarly, groups typically supportive of Democratic stances like Democrats for Life have remained silent on this issue, highlighting the contentious nature of the debate within even the Democratic coalition.

Legacy and Justice at the Heart of the Debate

As President Biden considers these calls for sweeping clemency, the decision could indeed define his presidential legacy. Advocates argue that this is an opportunity to realign federal policy with modern values of justice and equality, countering what they see as an outdated and unjust system of punishment.

The ongoing debate over the future of the death penalty in the United States remains deeply intertwined with issues of racial justice, ethical governance, and the direction of the Democratic party in a post-Biden era. With the President's term winding down, all eyes are on his next moves concerning this deeply divisive issue.
