Will Donald Trump Pardon Hunter Biden?
There is a very big question on the table, and while I do not necessarily agree with it, I think it is more likely to happen than not.
Once Trump takes office, the question is if Trump will pardon Hunter Biden for his crimes.
Trump has already stated that it is on the table, but not everyone is supporting this, so I want to take a look at both sides.
Yes or No
If we are being serious about Hunter’s crimes, this is not earth-shattering stuff, but the fact of the matter is that Hunter broke the law.
As a first-time offender for the gun charges, which is more or less paperwork in terms of what he was convicted for, he is unlikely to do any jail time.
For his tax evasion charges, while the numbers are significant, they are not significant enough that I would expect him to be sentenced to jail.
So, let’s assume I am right on that front and Hunter receives no jail time in either case... would it behoove Trump to pardon him as an olive branch to Democrats?
Senator Ron Johnson (R-TX) says no, stating, “I don’t think President Biden should pardon him. I don’t think President Trump should pardon him, but I think by President Trump signaling that he might commute the sentence or do something to lessen it, hopefully that will convince Joe Biden not to pardon his son,” he said. “I think that would be a terrible example.”
On the flip side of that is David Urban, who advised the former president’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, who believes Trump should offer the pardon.
He stated, “Listen what I would like to see happen is I’d like to see President Trump come out with a statement saying, ‘Look if Hunter Biden commits to a program of sobriety, an in-patient, or maybe out-patient, shows up, keeps his sobriety, I’ll pardon him.’”
I don’t support the pardon, but that is because I have a petty vendetta that Hunter has thumbed his nose at the law his entire life and gotten away with it.
As I have mentioned before, I grew up in an area where Hunter was charged with a DUI but got away with it because he was Joe Biden’s son.
Having said that, if he does wind up pardoning him, I like Urban’s plan, but I would also like to see Trump work out a deal with Biden where some type of statement is made walking back all the outrageous things they said about Trump.
Will it make me go after Trump if he does pardon Hunter? No, because I do see the political benefit of it, but I won’t like it.
You will not see my walking back my dislike or patting Trump on the back for this. But nor will I go after him as saying this is a major mistake.
I have bigger fish to fry on that front, such as holding Trump accountable for his immigration promises, getting inflation under control, and getting energy prices down.
