Whoopi Defends Malia Obama Ditching Last Name for Film Credit

It would appear that Malia Obama is looking to make a name for herself, on her own, rather than cashing on her famous surname.

Critics have railed against Malia for using “Malia Ann” in a recent film credit rather than using her full last name.

Whoopi Goldberg, who also changed her name, was quick to jump to her defense.

Changing Names

Goldberg, who was born Caryn Elaine Johnson, changed her name when she started her career.

She admitted that Whoopi was a name she had just made up, but she insisted that the name “Goldberg” was part of her heritage.

However, researcher Henry Louis Gates Jr. found no German or Jewish ancestry in Goldberg’s family history.

When a DNA test was run, it showed that her ancestors came from Guinea-Bissau of West Africa. Her great-grandparents were identified as William and Elsie Washington, so I am not sure where her Jewish ancestry came from, but I digress.

Malia Obama came under fire for premiering a short film called “The Heart” at the Sundance Film Festival because she did it under the name Malia Ann.

Goldberg responded to those calling her out for ditching her last name, stating, “She knows she’s an Obama, why do you care?

“Why do you care what she calls herself? If she wanted to call herself Jeanette McDonald, she has the right to!

“If I can be Whoopi Goldberg, she can be whoever the hell she wants to be!”

I hate to say it, but I actually agree and give Malia props for wanting to make it on her own name rather than using the famous “Obama” last name.

I also think we all have more important things to do and worry about than fussing over Obama’s kids using their last name or not on film projects.

You want to take a swipe at Barack or Michelle Obama, they are both fair game, but the kids, even as adults, should be left alone unless they bring themselves into the conversation, as Hunter Biden and the Trump children have (all but Barron, who should still be off limits to the media).
