The Biden administration has been working hard in recent days to convince the American people of the success it has supposedly achieved in mitigating the crisis at the southern border, but according to experts and insiders who spoke to the Daily Caller News Foundation, nothing could be further from the truth.
Former acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan and a Border Patrol agent currently working on the frontlines of the surge explained to the outlet that regardless of White House efforts to suggest otherwise, Biden's policies are failing.
Administration spin
Biden administration officials in recent days have been trumpeting the supposed success of initiatives undertaken after it permitted the expiration of so-called Title 42 public health rules that permitted rapid expulsion of migrants.
According to the White House, asylum and parole programs implemented in the wake of Title 42's end have yielded a marked drop in migrant encounters and are emblematic of President Joe Biden's effective approach.
As the New York Post noted, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre even went so far as to claim, “The president has done more to secure the border and to deal with this issue of immigration than anyone else. He really has.”
Jean-Pierre also declared that Biden's policies are “stopping the flow at the border,” but critics have been quick to call foul on that assertion.
Calling them out
While federal data suggested that there was a dip in migrant encounters seen between May and June of this year, a substantial surge began to take hold in July and August, giving lie to administration claims of progress in managing the border crisis.
Morgan pointed out what he contends is the truth of the situation, telling the Daily Caller News Foundation, “They're wanting to convince the American people because for a 30-day period they saw a momentary dip in time and they were going out there professing how successful they are because they have a momentary decline in only one demographic, and that was only on the southwest border and that was only for Border Patrol apprehensions.”
The aforementioned Border Patrol agent echoed those sentiments, saying, “The Biden administration post-Title 42 border policy has been nothing more than open season for anyone in the known world hoping to exploit the system.”
“Before Title 42 ended, Border Patrol could essentially remove illegal aliens from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala & Honduras, immediately after they crossed. They would be brought into the station, have their fingerprints taken, served their paperwork. Then be taken back to the nearest port of entry and deported,” the agent said. “Now, everyone is either claiming asylum or credible fear.”
Noting a marked uptick in family units making their way to the border, the agent added that such individuals “now know they'll be released with an NTA [Notice to Appear] that they'll never show up to,” underscoring the failure of the Biden administration's current approach.
These facts aside, the White House – often through Jean-Pierre – continues to insist that the situation at the border is now well in hand, thanks to the president's policies, a blatantly dishonest approach that Miranda Devine of the Post says deserves “the Gaslight Award of 2023.”
