When Kathy Bates won an Oscar, her mother's reaction was unexpected: 'You didn't discover the cure for cancer'
The mother of actress Kathy Bates was less than ecstatic with her daughter's Academy Award victory.
Bates described her mother's reaction to her best actress win for the 1990 film "Misery" in an interview with Ben Mankiewicz on "CBS Sunday Morning," as Fox News reported.
“When I won the Oscar for ‘Misery,’ she said, ‘I don’t know what all the excitement [is] about, you didn’t discover the cure for cancer.’”
Mankiewicz tweeted a video showing that Bates thanked her mom during her speech, but Bates insisted she had forgotten to do so.
The Surprise
As the actress sobbed in the video, she finally felt comfort as she said, "My mother should have had my life."
“When she died, I said come into me. I wanted her spirit to come into me. Even though we had so many difficulties, I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she’d given up.”
Bates revealed earlier in the interview that her parents delayed retirement in order to pay for her college expenses.
“My father literally had a heart attack after two or three years of giving up… he had to spend a fortune we didn’t have to send me to Southern Methodist University, and went to work when he was in his 70s. They gave up so much.”
Her Retirement
Last month, Bates confirmed to The New York Times that she is seriously contemplating retiring after her newest series, "Matlock," concludes.
“Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, clawed my way up for, I am suddenly able to be asked to use all of it. And it’s exhausting,” she told the outlet, adding, “This is my last dance.”
During her interview on "CBS Sunday Morning," she discussed an anonymous film project that left her doubting her ability to work in Hollywood after a negative experience.
“I think when you feel that kind of betrayal, it really devastates,” she said.
