Watchdog REPORT: FBI Had 26 Informants at Capitol Riot
From the very first day the riot at the Capitol was being investigated, Republicans have been trying to find out how many FBI informants were active at the riot.
According to a new DOJ AG report, there were at least 26 confidential FBI informants at the Capitol that day.
Of those, roughly half were inside the Capitol in restricted areas, with only nine having been proven not to have committed any illegal activities that day.
It’s All Coming Out Now
Outgoing FBI Director Christopher Wray has been getting hammered about this from day one, and he has always insisted the FBI had no involvement with what took place that day.
There are some on the right, however, that have stated that the FBI had resources that were not only at the riot, but some of them were among those egging on violence.
When Wray was asked about this during a hearing in July, he responded, “If you’re asking if the violence at the Capitol was part of some operation orchestrated by FBI sources or agents, the answer is no!”
That may not necessarily be true, according to this AG report.
The report stated that while the FBI did have 26 informants on site, technically only three were there at the behest of the FBI. The other 23 reportedly went to the Capitol that day on their own, so you can see where the confusion starts to settle in.
Of the 26 who were there, four entered the Capitol during the riot, 13 went to restricted areas, and nine were not involved in any illegal activity at all.
To that point, the report stated, “Our review concluded that none of these three FBI [informants] were authorized to enter the Capitol or a restricted area, or to otherwise break the law on January 6, nor was any [informant] directed by the FBI to encourage others to commit illegal acts on January 6.”
Vice President-elect JD Vance responded to the report on X, posting, “For those keeping score at home, this was labeled a dangerous conspiracy theory months ago.”
While this report does let the FBI off the hook in terms of activating its assets during the riot, it does not give them complete exoneration, as the FBI made many missteps along the way, including outright lying about some aspect of its assets that day.
The report went on to say, “[FBI should] ensure that its processes and procedures set forth with clarity the division of responsibilities.
“[And] clearly define a mechanism for making a formal determination whether and what kind of a nationwide intelligence and [informant] canvass is necessary and appropriate under FBI policies.”
Something tells me that once Kash Patel takes over if he gets confirmed, we will get a fair, more detailed report on this.
