Vegas Democrat Sentenced to 20 Years to Life in Murder Case
One of the worst stories of 2022 has finally come to a conclusion.
I am speaking of the case regarding Robert Telles, a Nevada Democrat who was accused of killing an investigative journalist.
Telles was found guilty, and he was just sentenced to 20 years to life for his crime.
Brutal Murder
Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German was brutally attacked at his home in a story that made national headlines.
Not long after the murder was reported, Telles became the person of interest in the murder.
German was investigating Telles, and prosecutors claim that Telles blamed German for ruining his career.
German clearly fought his attacker, and there was DNA evidence under his fingernails that matched Telles, locking up the case.
Videos showed Telles’ SUV leaving the neighborhood right around the time the attack against German took place as well as video showing Telles approaching German’s home and walking toward the side yard where German was stabbed to death.
The murder weapon was never found, but police did find pieces of a straw hat and sneakers similar to what the individual was wearing that left German’s home after the attack.
Telles did take the stand in his defense, telling the jury, “I am not the kind of person who would stab someone. I didn’t kill Mr. German. And that’s my testimony.”
German was a well-liked and very respected journalist in Las Vegas, regularly covering the courts, crime, and corruption in the state.
Katherine Jacobsen, U.S., Canada, and Caribbean program coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, celebrated the verdict and sentence against Telles, saying that it “sends an important message that the killing of journalists will not be tolerated.
“It is vital that the murder of journalists should be taken seriously and perpetrators held accountable.”
