Vance Shuts Down Narrative on National Abortion Ban

Donald Trump’s position on abortion has been very clear for years.

Donald Trump has always maintained that he believes the issue of abortion belongs with the states, and he has never supported a nationwide ban.

Even so, the Democrats say Trump would sign a federal ban, which Senator JD Vance (R-OH) has once again denied would be the case.

No National Ban

Vance was on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” this weekend, when he was once again put on the spot over a federal abortion ban.

This is because Trump ally, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has repeatedly stated that he wants to see a federal abortion ban in place.

Vance was asked, after a few days of Democrats saying that Trump would sign it, what he believed Donald Trump would do.

Vance responded, “I mean, if you’re not supporting it, as the president of the United States, you fundamentally have to veto it.”

So, the question now becomes what constitutes a ban?

Trump has previously supported a 20-week limit on abortions with exceptions, but would the media characterize that as an outright ban on abortions?

Trump has flirted with this idea more recently, stating, “But people are really — even hard-liners are agreeing — seems to be 15 weeks, seems to be a number that people are agreeing at.”

I think Trump needs to put a firm position on the books to settle what he would or would not support, but again, this is about how the media would present it.

I would not consider a 20-week abortion limit with exceptions as a ban because abortions themselves are not blocked for 20 weeks of the pregnancy, which should be more than enough time to make that decision.

Again, my opinion on what Congress could pass is not about my personal feelings on the matter because they are irrelevant to this argument.

This is about a bill that could be conceivably passed, and I have long maintained that the 15-20 week limit with the exceptions for rape, incest, and mother’s health is likely the sweet spot for a piece of legislation that both sides could walk away feeling like they got a win.

If not, this will be an issue in every election as we move forward, and we already know that when abortion is a major election issue, it is the Dems that come out on top.
