Vance appears to soften stance on US taking over Greenland
Well, that did not take very long.
During an interview on February 2, Vice President JD Vance stated that while the acquisition of Greenland could still happen, his demeanor says this is not likely to happen.
I had predicted this would die off rather quickly because Greenland expressed very little interest in becoming a territory of the United States.
Not Happening
I know a lot of people were gushing over this idea by Trump, but I was not one of them.
When I looked into how much funding Greenland was receiving from Denmark, it just did not make sense for a country that will soon be $40 trillion in debt.
Rather than purchase the country for the “national security” implications it poses, I think Trump would be far better served to swing that big stick to put pressure on Denmark to meet those needs.
To that point, Vance stated, “It’s really important to our national security. There are sea lanes there that the Chinese use, that the Russians use. Frankly, Denmark, which controls Greenland, [is] not doing its job, and it’s not being a good ally.”
When Vance was asked directly if the US would be purchasing Greenland, he gave a more tepid answer than he has in the past, stating, “I think it’s possible.”
Vance did express his full support for Trump putting pressure on Panama regarding access to the Panama Canal, which Rubio just visited to stress the importance for Panama to break off its relationship with China.
Vance stated, “They have violated a core tenet of the agreement.
“When we gave over the Panama Canal to the country of Panama, what we said is, you have to make sure that this canal respects American sovereignty and that you don’t give special benefits to the Chinese.”
I can tell you two things… Trump will not use military power to take the Panama Canal, and he will not acquire Greenland.
However, I fully expect pressure to be applied in both situations to give the United States far more comfortability regarding our relationships with both of these entities.
