United Nations urges immediate action in Sudan to avert mass fatalities
Devastating news surrounding Sudan has put the entire world on notice.
According to reports, the United Nations says Sudan is “on the brink of disaster” because of a lack of food in the country, with many in the nation now at risk of death due to famine.
The United Nations has warned that hundreds of thousands will die if action is not taken.
Having food and water is something that most Americans take for granted, but that isn't the case all over the world. While we're living a life of luxury, it's incredible how many people across the globe have to struggle every day in order to stay alive.
United Nations Human Rights chief Volker Turk stepped forward to shed light on the gravity of the situation in Sudan. Because of a fight between Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, millions have been forced to flee their homes because of a brutal famine and "intense fighting between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)."
Sudan is now facing what the United Nations has called "the world’s largest humanitarian crisis."
According to reports, nearly 600,000 people living in the country are already nearing starvation with thousands more at risk in the near future.
Over 3.5 million have already fled the country due to the crisis.
Reports have also noted that violence is becoming more and more prevalent every day in the country.
From sexual assaults to looting, the horrors are getting worse every passing day.
The African Union has called for an end to the violence to allow aid to be given to those in need.
"We call on the parties to agree, without further delay, on a ceasefire to lay the foundation for a meaningful political process and guarantee the protection of civilians in Sudan," they said in their statement.
"It is imperative that we lend our support to all peace initiatives driven by good faith and international law at the regional and international levels. The coordination of these efforts must remain our common objective, while preserving the central role of the UN and AU. We call again on the Sudanese parties to put the interest of their nation above all other considerations," they added.
Whether or not al-Burhan and Daglo will agree to any cease-fire terms is unclear at this time.
Please pray for the safety and security of these poor people.
