Trump Win Likely Means Legal Problems Are Over
Whether Democrats like it or not, the fact that Trump won this election is likely the end of all his legal problems.
In all honesty, the way this is all shaping up, it only makes it more apparent the lawsuits were put in place to stop Trump from running again
Now that he won, not only is Special Counsel Jack Smith reportedly looking to wind down the cases, but there are also reports that Judge Merchan may abandon the verdict in the New York hush-money case.
Giving Up
I knew a sitting president could not be prosecuted in federal court, but I honestly thought Dems would shelve the cases until Trump’s term was over.
Furthermore, I have been very vocal that my biggest concern regarding a Trump presidency was Trump having his AG fire Smith, then both of them being impeached if Dems took the House back either now or in 2026.
It appears that Jack Smith is going to take that option off the table, as he is reportedly winding down the cases to drop all charges.
As noted above, there are also reports about Merchan letting Trump off the hook, as he kind of showed his hand before the election.
Merchan could have sentenced Trump before the election, but he did not want to make that case part of the election.
To that point, he stated, “The Court is a fair, impartial, and apolitical institution.
“Adjourning decision on the motion and sentencing, if such is required, should dispel any suggestion that the Court will have issued any decision or imposed sentence either to give an advantage to, or to create a disadvantage for, any political party and/or any candidate for any office.”
Now that the election is over, Merchan has two ways to go about this.
He could table the sentencing hearing until after Trump’s term is over, or he could just drop the case by setting the verdict aside.
I will get back to my original premise in this case, that it was weak, and I fully expected the verdict to be overturned on appeal, and Merchan has to know the cards are lined up that way.
Democrats are going to have a fit, but I would not be surprised if there is a backroom deal going on right now on this front.
Trump and Biden are going to meet soon, and if Trump tables the idea that he would pardon Hunter Biden after he takes office if Biden convinces Garland to drop all these charges as well as reaching out to Merchan to abandon the verdict, I can see everyone getting a clean slate here.
