Well now… things are starting to get very interesting for Trump in a case where he will actually have a friendly judge.
The classified documents case trial date has not yet been set, but it is one of two or three cases currently filed against Trump that has a real shot of Trump being found guilty.
I would imagine that is why Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is now talking about setting his trial date aside so that case can proceed first, per Newsweek.
Get Him
Democrats want Trump found guilty of something before this election, and Bragg knows his case is weak.
The best chance that Democrats have of getting Trump in an orange jumper is the classified documents case, but with Bragg's trial set to start in the spring, the judge may just set aside the trial until after the election.
If that happens, Bragg knows Trump could, if he wins, have his Attorney General drop the case altogether, a chance that Bragg does not want to take.
So, there are now whispers that Bragg may move his trial date back just to ensure that the classified documents case is scheduled before the primary race starts.
Bragg stated, "There may be other cases coming. If and when that happens, we'll see what happens to the schedule. We have a firm trial date, our judge has been clear about that.
"But based upon experience—I've been a federal prosecutor, a state prosecutor, and now obviously local—in matters like this, judges will confer.
"I take a very broad lens on justice. We'll obviously follow the directives of our court, but won't sit on ceremony in terms of what was charged first ... Ultimately the judges set the trial schedule.
"I will say that, as a federal prosecutor, as a state prosecutor, I have had times where you're doing schedule coordination," reported Newsweek.
From Bragg's perspective, this could work out much better for him. He would surely back his trial up to conflict with the stretch drive of the general election.
If he does that, he can ensure that Trump does not have the time to properly campaign if he gets the nod, all but assuring Biden of a win next November.
Charges aside, anyone that does not think there is at least some political angle in this is a complete fool.
This is a very carefully coordinated attack on the part of Bragg to hurt Trump as much as possible during the election cycle.
