Trump Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in Assassination Attempt
The man who attempted to kill Donald Trump in the second assassination attempt has pleaded not guilty.
He has been charged with, among other charges, “attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and assaulting a federal officer.”
Even though he left a letter admitting it was an assassination attempt, he is hoping to have the mercy of a jury.
Not Guilty
The suspect appeared before the court on Monday where he made his plea.
He has also requested a jury trial, likely hoping he can get empathy from an anti-Trump jury.
The suspect was prevented from carrying out his alleged plan when Secret Service agents spotted the barrel of his weapon through the fence line at Trump’s golf course.
They opened fire, and the suspect fled, but he was caught later due to a witness providing authorities with a picture of his car.
After he was taken into custody, a letter was published by the DOJ, where the suspect admitted it was a failed assassination attempt as well as offering a bounty on Trump if someone could carry out the mission for which he failed.
The fact the DOJ published that letter had many up in arms, believing it had not redacted that aspect of the letter to encourage another attempt on Trump’s life.
This was the second attempt on Trump’s life in as many months.
In mid-July, a shooter was able to penetrate Secret Service protection, set up on a roof, then get off several shots, striking Trump and killing a civilian, before being taken out by a sniper team.
If the suspect in the second attempt is not convicted, I think Trump supporters will explode.
His prosecution, however, will have bipartisan support because even Democrats were outraged over the security breakdown by the Secret Service.
