Trump-RFK Jr. partnership unlikely, but could still happen
A new PJ Media piece by Matt Margolis is trying to keep alive the possibility that former President Donald Trump and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will strike up a partnership, but it doesn't seem like such a deal is realistic at this point.
It was first reported on July 15 that Trump and Kennedy had spoken to each other, but sources clearly said that no deal had been struck.
Kennedy was interested in overseeing health and medical areas in the administration, but Trump's campaign was concerned because Kennedy is really, really anti-vaccine.
The conversation ended without a deal, but the door was left open a crack to explore more possibilities later.
Anything can happen
"This is certainly not the year to be making predictions because so far, it has been the most unconventional election ever," Margolis wrote, referring to predictions Biden wouldn't run again, that he wouldn't debate Trump, and that he wouldn't exit the race.
He's right, and it would make sense for two candidates who might not be able to win on their own to team up, if such a thing were possible.
But after some audio of the phone call was leaked, Kennedy apologized to Trump for letting that happen and reiterated that he wasn't getting out of the race at this point.
"I am mortified"
“When President Trump called me I was taping with an in-house videographer,” Kennedy wrote on the X platform. “I should have ordered the videographer to stop recording immediately. I am mortified that this was posted. I apologize to the president.”
Trump appeared to agree with Kennedy's anti-vaccine rhetoric in the call.
He then said, “I would love you to do so,” speaking about Kennedy endorsing him. “And I think it’ll be so good for you and so big for you. And we’re going to win.”
Challenges
Kennedy is finding it hard to get on the ballot in all 50 states, which might be why he is thinking of getting out.
While most third-party candidates don't get a significant share of the votes, Kennedy has been polling at 9%, which is significant in terms of acting as a spoiler.
"Let's face it: stranger things have happened," Margolis concluded his article, and of course, he's right. Stranger things happen all the time.
