Trump lauds FL lawmaker's change in affiliation from Democrat to Republican
Donald Trump's November electoral triumph has led to something of a cultural shift in which conservatism has become socially acceptable once again, with the realignment also making its way into legislatures across the country.
As evidence of this burgeoning sea-change, a second Florida lawmaker recently announced her decision to leave the Democratic Party in favor of the GOP, a move that drew words of congratulation from none other than the president-elect himself, as The Hill reports.
Cassel makes her move
On Friday, state Rep. Hillary Cassel took to X in order to reveal that she has switched her political affiliation from Democrat to Republican, a decision she notes was not made lightly.
“As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party's failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism,” Cassel began.
She continued, “I'm constantly troubled by the inability of the current Democratic Party to relate to everyday Floridians.”
Adding that she “can no longer remain in a party that doesn't represent my values,” Cassel stated her belief that by joining the GOP, she knows she will garner collaboration and respect among fellow Republicans and will be able to work toward “common-sense solutions” for those she represents.
In switching parties, Cassel joins state Rep. Susan Valdes, who recently made the same decision after her defeat to become Hillsborough County Democratic Party chair.
Trump lauds Cassel's move
It did not take long for Cassel's move to attract the attention and the praise of the president-elect.
Commenting on his Truth Social platform, Trump signaled his approval and wished Cassel well as she pursues this new political path.
“Congratulations to Hillary Cassel for becoming the second State Representative from the Great State of Florida to switch her Party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, once more expanding the GOP Supermajority in the State House!” wrote Trump.
He continued, “I would further like to invite other Disillusioned Democrats to switch Parties, and join us on this noble quest to Save our Country and, Make America Great Again – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE, THANK YOU HILLARY!”
Whether any additional lawmakers -- state or federal -- take the president-elect up on that invitation, however, only time will tell.
