The Trump faithful will be happy with the latest announcement from Donald Trump.
I am not so sure the rest of the party will take it as well.
While on the Hugh Hewitt show this week, Trump stated that indictment would not deter him from a presidential run.
But Would It Deter Voters
Trump does not believe he will be indicted in the first place, but I think he underestimates how motivated Merrick Garland is to slap him with this indictment.
Trump stated, “I can’t imagine being indicted. I’ve done nothing wrong.
“I don’t think the people of the United States would stand for it.
“And as you know, if a thing like that happened, I would have no prohibition against running. You know that.”
Trump added, “There is no reason that they can [indict], other than if they’re just sick and deranged, which is always possible, because I did absolutely … nothing wrong.”
The fact of the matter is that whether Trump likes it or not, there is a process for holding documents upon leaving office.
Furthermore, he allegedly had defense capability documents for other governments in his possession, of which there is no justification.
Now, I am on record saying that I do not think he will ever get convicted, but I also believe the DOJ has enough to indict him in the hopes that he does not run for election in 2024.
There are other problems for Trump, however, starting with the slate of false electors to give to Pence to block the election certification.
Trump says he had nothing to do with that, but Garland is going to do everything in his power to link Trump to that, which I would assume would be some sweetheart deals for someone involved to say that Trump gave the order.
None of that matters, though, because there is only one question that needs to be answered…
Will voters back Trump for the nomination with an indictment hanging over his head?
It is a risky move and one that could cost the GOP the White House in 2024.
I know Trump wants to run again, but I think he should back off and allow someone like DeSantis to take the lead.
If Trump did not have all these legal issues hanging over his head, it would be a different story.
But he does, and that is something every one of us needs to consider when we head to the polls for the primary vote in the 2024 election.
This is about protecting the MAGA movement, not about appeasing Donald Trump.
Simply put, conservatives cannot lose the White House in 2024 because if we do, we probably will not see it again anytime soon.
This is about winning, period, and we have to decide if Donald Trump is the best name on the ballot to make that to happen.
So, let’s open the floor… if Donald Trump is indicted, would you still vote for him in the primary or would you want him to back away and allow DeSantis or someone else to take the lead?
