Trump, GA GOP Fight to Block Ballot Acceptance After Deadline
On Sunday, it was reported that the Georgia GOP and Trump campaign had filed to block the state from accepting early voting ballots after the deadline had passed.
The report stated that multiple counties throughout the state were going past the mandated deadline.
This is interesting on multiple fronts.
Early Voting
Now, from what I have seen, early voting in Georgia was heavily favoring Republican voters, so I was a bit stunned to see that the GOP and Trump campaign were trying to block early voting ballots from being counted.
That said, the rules are the rules, so why were counties continuing to accept the ballots past the deadline?
State GOP Chairman Josh McKoon wrote, "The Georgia Republican Party, in conjunction with the RNC have filed suit in federal court to halt the counting of these ballots.
"At minimum, we want to sequester the ballots that were submitted without proper oversight of our election observers.
"Additionally, we have requested Georgia’s Secretary of State and Attorney General get involved to resolve this matter and find answers to the burning questions we all have.”
The letter continued, "Why didn’t these six counties inform the state board of elections, their county board of elections, the Secretary of State, or their local governments about their plans to essentially extend early voting?
"Who gave the order to Fulton and Chatham County officials to bar poll observers from monitoring the process? Why did they do this?
He added, "We will keep the public informed all along the way," the Republican said. "However, this doesn’t change our overall mission. We MUST keep our foot on the gas and turn out voters on Tuesday like our lives depend on it. Because it does."
So, that explains a lot because Fulton County is a heavy Democrat district, so now I see why they were so upset.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kevin Farmer agreed to set the rules aside, so again, I have no idea why we have any of these rules if they are not going to be followed.
Farmer ruled, “I find that it is not a violation of those two code sections for a voter to hand-return their absentee ballots.”
In the overall scheme of things, this is a nothing burger because only 105 ballots were reportedly returned (that is of the last reporting on the matter as of 5 pm on Saturday).
I would not be too worried about this unless we found out there were thousands of ballots accepted after the deadline.
Having said that, again, why do we have rules if they are going to be brushed aside? Judges just seem to enforce laws these days based on their ideology rather than the Constitution and the law.
