Trump Endorses Speaker Johnson for Next Term

There has been a lot of talk of whether Speaker Johnson (R-LA) would hold the gavel next term if the GOP won the House.

Well, that question has been answered, with Johnson winning the House election after being endorsed by Trump.

I honestly would not have been surprised either way, but I do believe that Johnson has earned the right to have a full term as Speaker after the debacle that took place during the last session.

One Chance

Johnson took over a House that was in complete disarray.

He backed down to Dems on several occasions, but I had written at the time that he was in a very bad place with a thin majority and no backup in the Senate or White House.

In other words, he had no bargaining power, so he had to take what he could get, but that will not be the case in the next term.

The fact that the GOP was able to hold the House in this environment speaks volumes about Johnson, but his leash in the upcoming term will be very short.

Johnson will have maybe two votes to spare in any given vote, so he has to make sure the entire caucus is on the same page before flooring any legislation.

He also needs to realize that Congress has to be perfect during this term with two very small majorities.

Trump is going to need all four years to get his agenda passed, so we have to hold both the House and the Senate in the 2026 mid-terms, something history says will be all but impossible to do.

In the other chamber, Senator Thune (R-S.D.) was elected as Senator Majority Leader, which was shocking to me due his relationship with Senator McConnell (R-KY).

I can tell you that Trump will not be happy with Thune, but these two will have to figure out a way to work together if Trump wants his agenda to be implemented.
