Trump Endorses Barrasso for Republican Whip
Donald Trump is once again dipping his toes in the GOP leadership pool.
Trump announced that he is endorsing Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) for Senate Republican WHIP.
In making the endorsement, Trump called Barrasso a “fantastic senator.”
Taking Over
Trump has more or less taken over the GOP at this point.
He has family and surrogates installed in the Republican National Committee already.
As soon as the new leadership was introduced, staff cuts were made the RNC was effectively folded into Trump’s campaign operations.
One of the problems when Trump was president in 2016 was that he had resistance in the House and Senate leadership, something he is clearly trying to fix.
Senator McConnell (R-KY) has already announced that he will step down, but so far, it is McConnell's disciples who are running for Senate Leader.
Trump needs to get his people in there somehow, and that will start with Barrasso working for him as the WHIP.
Trump stated, “John Barrasso is a fantastic Senator for the incredible people of Wyoming.
“He is running to be the next Republican Whip for the Senate Republican Conference, a very important job, to ensure we pass and enact Strong Legislation that puts America First.
“I know John very well — he will never let you down. John Barrasso has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Trump has not yet endorsed anyone for Senate leader, but I'm sure that will change if Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) decides to toss his hat into the ring, and I would expect that to happen sooner rather than later.
With Barrasso now in the WHIP race, that will leave his current post, chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, open.
So far, Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) have announced they are interested in the position. Again, though, Trump has not announced his endorsement for this post.
