Trump DOJ will review Tina Peters case
Former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters may get some relief from her recent prosecution.
If you recall, Peters bought into the idea that Trump had won the 2020 election, and she breached her county’s election system in an effort to prove the election had been rigged.
Donald Trump’s DOJ has just announced that it will review her case to see if justice was served or if this was a politically motivated prosecution.
Stepping In
I know this may not be a very popular opinion, but I think Trump is way overstepping his bounds in trying to influence all of these cases.
For instance, when the Trump DOJ filed to have the charges dropped against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, I thought Trump was way out of line.
While everyone is innocent until proven guilty, the evidence against Adams is very strong, justifying the charges of bribery, among other charges.
Yet, because he has expressed a willingness to work with Trump on immigration, Trump wants the charges dropped.
I have literally gotten into screaming matches with my friends over this case, noting how small of a cog Adams actually is, and the horrible optics this offers to the American people. Have we really gotten to a point that no crime is considered a crime if they are backing or willing to help Donald Trump?
In the case of Peters, she clearly broke the law trying to prove Trump right, but like everyone else who tried to prove the election was stolen, she fell short.
This has led to Yaakov M. Roth, acting assistant attorney general in the department’s civil division, filing a “statement of interest” in the case.
Roth stated, “Reasonable concerns have been raised about various aspects of Ms. Peters’ case.
“These concerns relate to, among other things, the exceptionally lengthy sentence imposed relative to the conduct at issue.”
The downside for Peters is that her case was tried in state court, so the federal government does not have the power to influence the case beyond the statement of interest filed by Roth.
Ultimately, even if the Trump DOJ applies pressure, it must rely on state prosecutors to carry out its bidding. Whereas I believe Trump should just stay out of these cases, if not for optics alone (not to mention the added ammo he is supplying Democrats).
I know Trump is trying to help the people who tried to help him, but every time he does this, he gives the Dems more to use against him and other Republicans in the upcoming elections.
I stated from the outset this was my concern about Trump being in office, and I just hope I am wrong when it comes time for people to vote in 2026 and 2028.
