Trump Dodges Pulling NC Gubernatorial Candidate Endorsement
If you have been following the news, you know North Carolina GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson is in some big trouble.
A blistering CNN report surfaced last week that is destined to take Robinson out of this race.
Even with the scathing allegations, Donald Trump is not yet ready to pull his endorsement from Robinson.
What Vetting
I have been critical of Donald Trump and the RNC in the past for putting their respective marbles in the baskets of candidates without properly vetting them.
In Robinson’s case, he has been accused of making some rather controversial comments on the message board of a pornographic website, including calling himself a “black Nazi.”
He is also alleged to have expressed his feelings about bringing slavery back, as well as noting his sexual appetites.
Robinson has claimed this is all a setup to take him out of the race, but the report claimed that the emails used for the message boards were confirmed by someone on his staff.
North Carolina is a state that Trump has been targeting, and Robinson clearly played a significant role in that quest, but that has all been derailed.
Harris and Trump remained locked in a dead heat in the state, with multiple polls having them either tied or within the margin of error.
I cannot say the same for Robinson, however.
He was never a very well-received candidate, and he was already trailing by 10 points before the scandal, but there was hope when the started to close the gap, getting within five points at one point.
The latest CNN poll has him down by 17 points, so this race is all but over.
This was a bad endorsement by Trump before the scandal, but now it really looks terrible as we once again have a major scandal in a high-profile candidate who somehow was not properly vetted by Trump’s campaign for endorsement or by the RNC before backing the candidate in the race.
Even so, when Trump was asked about his endorsement and pulling it, he stated, “I don’t know the situation.”
Others have not been so hesitant, as three Republican governors have already pulled back as well as the Republican Governor’s Association.
On top of this disaster, another key endorsement, Kerri Lake in Arizona, is getting torched by Gallego, trailing by 14 points in the last Fox News poll.
These are two elections the GOP wanted and needed to win, but Trump’s candidates are going to wind up losing them both.
Simply put, Trump and the party have to be better at picking candidates in these more moderate states or the GOP is going to quickly become a thing of the past.
