Trump cuts Obama-era HUD rule
Barack Obama is probably seething today after a rule change was announced in the Department of Urban Development (HUD).
The Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule was put in place during the Obama administration, then halted during the first Trump administration.
Biden tried to put the rule back in place, but he backed down thinking it would hurt him politically during the re-election season.
Has to Go
When Trump rescinded the order during his first term, Trump claimed the rule was to "eliminate single-family zoning to destroy the value of houses" for the benefit of "far-left Washington bureaucrats."
HUD Secretary Scott Turner is now quashing the order altogether.
Turner stated, "Over the past four years, and really dating back to the Obama administration, far-left Democrats have tried to socially re-engineer communities from the top down.
"By terminating the AFFH rule, localities will no longer be required to complete onerous paperwork and drain their budgets to comply with the extreme and restrictive demands made up by the federal government."
Turner then stated that abolishing this rule will allow the government to "better serve rural, urban, and tribal communities that need access to fair and affordable housing."
According to the CATO Institute, Obama’s rule cost taxpayers about $55 million per year in order to be able to collected the required certification.
Turner has been on board with the DOGE cuts from the outset, even being among the first of Trump’s cabinet members to state that he would be forming an internal DOGE to spot waste and fraud within his department.
I am guessing that the elimination of the AFFH rule was part of that task force.
This, to me, is just another example of the overreach of government that Democrats seem to thrive on, while conservatives have, forever, been asking our representatives to downsize government to reduce spending.
We are going to see a lot of pushback from Democrats on this, as they want the American people to think that the Trump administration has gone rogue.
Trump, however, never hid his agenda, and was quite clear about the cuts he would be making, and more than a few people of the left crossed the aisle in order to elect him to office.
Currently, Trump is polling at 52% approval rating, with more than 70% of Americans say they support these efforts to have a more efficient and streamlined government.
Point being, Democrats may want to find a new line of attack or risk a disastrous 2026 and 2028.
