Trump Could Solidify Conservative Hold in Court If Elected

When Donald Trump took office in 2016, it wound up giving conservatives a massive hold on the court.

With McConnell blocking a nomination by Obama, Trump was able to make a pick as soon as he took office.

The death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg gave conservatives an unexpected seat, now giving our side of the aisle a 6-3 edge.

Reshaping the Court

The 2024 election will be just as important as the 2016 election in terms of the shaping of the court.

Justices Alito and Thomas are getting up there in age, and will likely need to be replaced during the next term.

Justice Sotomayor is the oldest liberal member, and Dems are worried that since she has not retired under Biden, she could wind up turning her seat over to another conservative as well.

I have little doubt that if a Democrat wins the 2024 election, either Alito or Thomas will probably be replaced by a liberal.

However, if we can win this election, I would suspect that as long as the GOP controls the Senate, both of them will retire.

Then, even if Chief Justice Roberts held out, conservatives would be no worse than a 5-4 majority.

Skye Perryman, senior adviser at Demand Justice, a progressive judicial advocacy group, is very concerned about how this may play out, stating, “This is devastating to many people who might look at the Supreme Court as an institution that could be relied on to protect democracy.”

There are still plenty of conservatives who are not convinced that Trump is their guy, but I would just point to the Supreme Court’s future and preserving a conservative hold.

Tell them to bite the bullet and pull the handle if for nothing else, to protect the most important court in the land.
