Trump casts doubt on legitimacy of Harris' candidacy
The process through which Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic Party nominee was unconventional to say the least, and not everyone believes it was on the level.
Among those questioning the effective coronation of Harris as her party's standard-bearer is none other than former President Donald Trump, who has gone so far as to suggest that his rival should be disqualified from the race for the illegitimate path that got her there, as Newsweek reports.
Harris' path under scrutiny
Whereas most major party presidential candidates are those who have survived a comprehensive primary process through which their ideas and policy positions are vetted and challenged by those seeking the same spot atop the general election ticket, Harris underwent no such trial in the run-up to November.
Rather, once President Joe Biden decided to withdraw from his re-election campaign last month and endorse Harris as his successor, party elites swifty coalesced behind the VP and made her the de facto candidate.
The anointing was complete when party delegates used a rapid and unusual method to hand Harris the nomination even before anyone set foot in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention last week.
As such, Harris now stands as the Democratic Party candidate for president despite never earning a single primary election vote, either in this election season or in the lead-up to the 2020 race, in which she was also -- rather briefly -- a candidate.
The entire scenario, according to Trump, renders Harris a highly questionable -- if not utterly illegitimate -- candidate for the highest office in the land.
Trump lets loose
On Saturday, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to let his feelings be known about Harris' status as the Democratic Party nominee.
“Kamala Harris is the Weakest Presidential Candidate in History on Crime. She's allowed millions of people to pour through our Borders, many from prisons, mental institutions and, indeed, terrorists, coming in at levels never seen before,” he wrote.
Trump continued, “What gives her the right to run for President? She got no votes to Biden's 14 Million. She failed in her previous attempt, was the first one out of 22 people to quit, never made it to Iowa, and now she's a Presidential Candidate?”
“This is a Threat to Democracy!” Trump concluded.
Echoing those sentiments, albeit in a much more succinct way was Fox News personality Jeanine Pirro, who wrote on X, “Kamala Harris is the first bait-and-switch candidate we've ever had run for president!” and that is something with which millions of Americans would surely agree.
