Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), the current GOP Majority Whip, has tossed his hat into the ring to be the next Speaker of the House.
Emmer has already received the endorsement of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
However, even though McCarthy and Trump are allies, Trump has told his allies in Congress that he will not support Emmer’s bid to be Speaker.
Here We Go Again
Here is the problem…
In this fractured caucus, if Trump does not back the candidate, MAGA members of Congress will never support that candidate. If Trump does support the candidate, the 20 or so moderates in the House will not vote for that candidate.
Emmer has not endorsed Trump in the primary race, so as far as Trump and MAGA are concerned, he is the enemy.
Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn brought that exact point up during a recent interview, as well as stating, “If somebody is so out of step with where the Republican electorate is, where the MAGA movement is, how can they even be in the conversation?
“We need a MAGA speaker. That’s what it comes down to. Because if you look at the numbers, if you look at the energy, if you look at the heat, this is the Trump party, this is the MAGA party. It is no longer the old-school khaki establishment Republican Party.”
Emmer’s office says there is no fracture between Trump and Emmer, stating, “Whip Emmer worked hand in hand with President Trump to help House Republicans fire Nancy Pelosi and retake the majority. If he becomes Speaker, Whip Emmer looks forward to continuing that productive relationship.”
But, until Emmer formally comes out and endorses Trump, Trump will fight him.
The caucus is scheduled to meet on Monday, then a vote is expected on Tuesday to put a new Speaker candidate on the floor for a vote.
Let’s just hope they get it right this time and we don’t have another debacle like the one that took place with Jim Jordan last week.
