Trump allies skeptical about whether Mike Johnson can advance president-elect's agenda
Donald Trump certainly wants as much peace and cooperation as he can find with his fellow Republicans during his next term, but some on the right are suggesting that some changes may need to be considered to make a unified Republican government run as smoothly as possible starting in 2025.
One of the ideas being discussed is the concept of removing Mike Johnson from his position of speaker of the House of Representatives.
House Freedom Caucus chair Andy Harris, a Republican from Maryland, recently gave an interview to Fox Business in which he said Republicans need to seriously consider if their current leadership "is what we need" to push Donald Trump's agenda forward.
"Before the last couple of weeks, I was in his corner, but now we should consider what’s the best path forward," Harris said of current Speaker Mike Johnson.
"We do need to consider whether -- if we’re going to advance Mr. Trump’s agenda -- whether the current leadership is what we need," he added.
Harris' comments came only about a week after he publicly said that he was still on the fence about how he'll vote during the Jan. 3 speaker's vote.
Congressman Harris had previously released a statement saying he was "now undecided on what House leadership should look like in the 119th Congress."
Speaker Mike Johnson seems to be on very thin ice with many Republicans after his handling of the government funding bill, but it's not necessarily over for the man from Louisiana.
Sure, if Donald Trump APPROVES of replacing Johnson, you can bet that many Republicans are going to fall in line and search for an alternative.
On the other hand, if Trump wants Johnson to stick around, there's a pretty good chance that Johnson could keep his position at the top of the House of Representatives.
Regardless of who ends up as speaker of the House, Republicans really want to get something figured out soon.
It's been speculated that if the speaker's race can't be settled soon, then Republicans risk not being able to certify the results of the 2024 election on Jan. 6.
If Harris's thoughts represent those of Trump, then Jim Jordan might be considered.
"I like Jim Jordan. I think he should have a shot at being speaker. I think he will have a shot at being speaker after the election," Harris said back in March 2024.
