Tony Roberts, frequent performer in Woody Allen movies, passes away

Legendary film actor Tony Roberts has passed away.

Roberts was 85 years old at the time of his passing.

His daughter, Nicole Burley, confirmed the news of his death and revealed that Roberts passed away after losing his battle with lung cancer.

While some may have never heard of the name Tony Roberts, many have watched him on screen without even realizing it.

Tony Roberts appeared in several Woody Allen movies, often cast as the best friend of Allen's character.

The actor had roles in the hit Woody Allen films Don’t Drink the Water and Play it Again, Sam.

Roberts said in his memoir that he was very pleased with how his life turned out.

“I’ve never been particularly lucky at card games. I’ve never hit a jackpot. But I have been extremely lucky in life,” Roberts wrote.

Roberts also revealed he always had a fascination and love of acting, knowing that was his destined career from a young age.

“Unlike many of my pals, who didn’t know what they wanted to become when they grew up, I knew I wanted to be an actor before I got to high school,” he went on.

Roberts also touched on the fact that he was raised around many actors, which he believes could have contributed to his desire to get into the industry.

“I was raised in the middle of a lot of actor talk. My cousin was Everett Sloane, who was a very fine actor. My father’s friends were mostly actors. I’m sure that in some way I needed to prove myself in their eyes,” Roberts said in a past interview with the Associated Press.

Roberts’ hard work paid off and did not go unnoticed by the press.

“Roberts’ confident onscreen presence — not to mention his tall frame, broad shoulders and brown curly mane — was the perfect foil for Allen’s various neurotic characters, making them more funny and enjoyable to watch,” the Jewish Daily wrote of Roberts back in 2016.

There are not many who get to say they lived such a full life as Roberts did.

We pray for peace and comfort for anyone grieving the loss of the great Tony Roberts.
