Texas AG Ken Paxton Settles Securities Fraud Case
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been surrounded by legal issues over the last few years.
The biggest one was the impeachment of Paxton, which he beat.
Now he appears to have put another issue to bed, settling his securities fraud case.
Let’s Move On
It was not all that long ago that many in the media wrote Paxton off.
They thought he would either be removed from office via an impeachment or that he would wind up in jail.
While Paxton was impeached in the Texas House, when the trial went to the Senate, Paxton beat the charges.
One of the last legal issues that Paxton had on his plate was a securities fraud case, but that is now settled as well.
Paxton agreed to community service and pay restitution in the case, but he does not have to enter a plea under the agreement, which I am sure was extremely important to him.
According to local reports, Paxton will have to perform 100 hours of community service as well as make restitution to the tune of $271,000.
Paxton will also be required to take 15 hours of legal ethics classes.
Dan Cogdell, Paxton’s attorney was adamant that he was not seeking a deal, but when the deal was put on the table by prosecutors, Paxton “was happy to agree to the terms of the dismissal.”
He stated, “But let me be clear, at no time was he going to enter any plea bargain agreement or admit to conduct that simply did not occur.
“There is no admission of any wrongdoing on Ken’s part in the agreement because there was no wrongdoing on his part.”
Paxton is not quite out of the woods just yet, however, as he still has to face a suit by former staffers who claim that they were improperly fired by Paxton.
This case was at the root of the impeachment charges that were brought against Paxton, as the staffers came forward as whistleblowers to say that Paxton was doing favors for real estate mogul Nate Paul, charges that Paxton denies.
This case being put to bed will be celebrated by Trump and MAGA, as Paxton has been doing a lot of trench work since 2016 on behalf of Donald Trump, flooding the courts with lawsuits, mostly on immigration issues.
