Ted Cruz Accuses Schumer of Violating Federal Election Laws
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is in a surprisingly tight race against Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX).
In the latest polling, Cruz’s lead is down to a single point.
Cruz is firing back by charging Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Allred with illegally coordinating during the campaign.
Big Money
I live in Texas, and I have stated here that I barely see any Cruz ads on TV, while I see about a dozen for Allred every day.
I have not seen Cruz on the campaign trail, but I see Allred events all over the place.
The reason is that Cruz is barely getting by, with nothing but dust bunnies in his war chest, while Allred has money flowing from all over the country and Democrat PACs.
According to Cruz, some of that is illegal, as the coordinated efforts of Schumer and Allred have exceeded legal expenditure limits.
Cruz’s office stated, “Colin Allred’s campaign is illegally coordinating with Chuck Schumer and the DSCC. We are calling on the FEC to immediately investigate and put a stop to this flagrant violation of federal law.”
The complaint against Allred states, “Allred and his Senate campaign are blatantly coordinating with the DSCC on television ads far in excess of the coordinated party expenditure limit, thus resulting in potentially millions of dollars in excessive in-kind contributions from DSCC to Allred. Complainants ask the Federal Election Commission (‘FEC’ or ‘Commission’) to immediately investigate and put a stop to this flagrant violation of federal law.”
Allred, while having a very progressive record, is painting himself as a moderate in his ads.
He is leaning into having played football for Baylor as well as his limited professional career.
Football is Texas, and it’s working because he took what was a near double-digit deficit and turned it into a dead heat.
I cannot tell you how disastrous this would be for the GOP if we lose a Senate seat in this state to Democrats, but McConnell and his PAC are reportedly doing nothing to help Cruz.
It also does not help that Cruz is not particularly well-liked in the state.
I have maintained for some time that if the GOP would ever primary him with a decent candidate, Cruz would probably lose, but that is never going to happen.
If Cruz manages to hold on and win this election, this problem may fix itself, as Cruz may be asked to join Trump’s administration.
If that happens, Governor Abbott can either appoint someone to finish Cruz’s term or hold a special election. My guess is that he would choose the former with as close as this election is right now.
Why chance a Democrat winning who has now developed a statewide profile when you can put another Republican in that office, which was won by a Republican, and give that individual some time to develop their statewide profile before the next election?
