Speaker of the House McCarthy (R-CA) better have his house in order if he plans on blocking Democrats on the debt ceiling.
Rep. Swalwell (D-CA) has revealed the Democrat plan to work around McCarthy to get their legislation passed.
If only six Republicans jump ship, Democrats will be in business.
Speaker Discharge
Swalwell and company dug deep into the books for a “go around” of Speaker McCarthy, but they are going to need help from Republicans to make it happen.
Swalwell explained, “The greatest asset that Russia has now would be a Republican Party that is unwilling to help Ukraine. So there is a lot on the line. And Democrats are united to deliver the votes.”
“I think you’re going to see speaker discharge. The country is going to learn that word because a discharge petition, the worst named political term you could think of, means that if you get a majority of the Congress to come forward to support legislation, you can go around the speaker, I think we’ll have to go around the speaker to do all of that.”
The discharge petition is not something you will see very often because it would require bipartisan cooperation to go against the party in the majority.
Democrats currently hold 212 seats, so they would need six Republicans to sign on to legislation, which would then allow them to floor the legislation without the Speaker’s approval.
The debt ceiling has people concerned, and it is going to take a strong stomach to hold firm, so this is going to be McCarthy’s first really big test with the MAGA group that he had to make concessions with to get the Speaker’s chair.
If he folds, you better believe they will test the removal rule that was just changed to accommodate them.
