Suspicious Package Found Near Rep. Thompson’s Office

Was someone trying to kill Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS)?

A suspicious package was found near his office on Tuesday.

Police cleared the area and after investigating, said it was nothing to be concerned about at the time.

Still Investigating

Thompson is the January 6 Select Committee co-chair, so he will clearly be on the radar of some extremists.

It was initially reported that police initially found a letter with a suspicious substance inside.

Shortly after that initial report, police revealed no powder in the letter.

However, the language of the letter had them concerned.

Capitol Police stated, "This afternoon Congressional staff inside the Rayburn House Office Building reported that they received a letter with concerning language.

"We just screened it and determined it not to have anything dangerous inside. Powder was not found inside."

The statement continued, "Our investigators take all concerning statements and threats seriously. They are now working to determine who sent the letter and why."

Thompson is set to preside over the next committee public hearing later this week.
