Supreme Court Stays Arrest of Attorney

If you think our Supreme Court has controversial cases, the Indian Supreme Court just dropped a doozy.

The high court has stayed the arrest of an attorney that has been accused of sedition and conspiracy to wage war against India, reported The Ground News.

At the center of the allegations against attorney Deeksha Dwivedi is a press conference she held after a fact-finding mission, reported The Hindu.

Controversial Decision

If found guilty, this woman will never see the light of day again.

According to the report, she led a fact-finding mission regarding the violence that had taken place in Manipur. She was part of a three-person team that did the investigation.

After the “mission,” she held a presser at the National Federal of Indian Women.

Senior advocate Siddharth Dave stated, “We learn that the offenses are Section 121A, 124A, 153, 153A, and 153B of the Indian Penal Code. Two of the offenses are punishable with life imprisonment.”

He then went on to say that his client had not yet received the required documentation in the case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was addressed by Chief Justice Chandrachud, who stated, “She is a member of our Bar. There is an apprehension that she might likely be arrested. She does not have a copy of the FIR.

“The Solicitor General may take instructions on the background of the case. List on Friday. Till 5 p.m. on Friday, no coercive steps will be taken against the petitioner.”

For now, Dwivedi has caught a major break, but she faces an uphill battle in this case. As noted above, if she loses, she will spend the rest of her life in jail.
