Chief Justice John Roberts has given Donald Trump one more breath of life to keep his tax returns out of the hands of Democrats.
Roberts granted a stay to block the House Ways and Means Committee.
The committee has until Thursday, November 10, at noon to respond to the filing.
To be clear, this is not a permanent win for Trump.
This could turn on him rather quickly if Roberts finds that their response justified getting the returns.
His order stated, "Upon consideration of the application of counsel for the applicants, it is so ordered that the mandate of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, case No. 21-5289, is hereby stayed pending further order of the undersigned or of the court."
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal has already laid out his plan of attack, stating, "We've waited long enough—we must begin our oversight of the IRS's mandatory presidential audit program as soon as possible."
That is not what this is about, and everyone knows it.
The Dems want Trump's tax returns so they can find something to try to embarrass him.
I would bet dollars to donuts that the returns will somehow get leaked not long after the Dems get their hands on them.
