Senate Democrats have continued their quest to take down the Supreme Court as we know it.
The Senate Judiciary Committee passed a new ethics reform bill for the Supreme Court on Thursday, reported the New York Times.
Every Democrat on the committee voted in favor of the new law, while every Republican voted against it.
Take Them Down
This all goes back to trips that were taken by Clarence Thomas that were on the tab of Harlan Crow. Because Crow and Thomas are close friends, Thomas was not required to report the trips, per current ethics rules for the court, so he did not.
Democrats have used these trips to try to take down Thomas, as though he was doing something illegal and against the rules. The optics may not look very good, but the fact of the matter is that Thomas was following the current guidelines.
And, as I have stated numerous times, the trips he did not report were no different from the trips RBG took during her time on the court as well as Justice Breyer.
From what I have read about the new rules, they very much center on gifts and trips and how they are being reported. The ultimate goal here is for the rules of the court to be as strict as those of the House and Senate.
The new rule would also appoint an oversight board that would consist of two judges from the lower courts who would investigate any complaints made regarding possible violations.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) was among the most vocal critics of the new rules.
He stated, “What you’re trying to do is not improve the court, you’re trying to destroy it as it exists,” reported The Hill.
His point was that the Democrats have been trying to dismantle this particular court since Donald Trump was able to make three appointments to it. This is more or less revenge being carried out, using Senator Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) comments as proof of that.
Graham added, “You have done just about everything there is to do to delegitimize this court. Members of the Democratic leadership went to the steps of the Supreme Court and literally threatened people.”
Believe me, if there were a liberal majority on the court right now, this entire ethics argument would have never been broached.
