Kenneth Mitchell, who played Kol on “Star Trek: Discovery,” has passed away at the age of 49.
Mitchell also played in a Marvel movie, playing Joseph Danvers in “Captain Marvel.”
Gone Too Soon
In addition to playing Kol in the TV series, Mitchell also provided the voice for several characters in the animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”
Mitchell’s last credit was in 2022, which is when his condition started to really impact his career.
He had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease four years ago, almost to the day.
He continued to play Kol on “Star Trek: Discovery,” with the show integrating his wheelchair as a “hover chair.”
In August of 2021, Mitchell lost his voice, ultimately leading to the loss of his life on February 24.
Mitchell’s acting career was only two decades long, beginning in 2000 with a role in a short, but he quickly found himself in several recurring and single-episode TV roles with the occasional movie thrown in.
Some of the more notable TV shows that he appeared in were “Leap Years,” “The Unit,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “CSI: Miami,” and “Ghost Whisperer.” And, of course, “Star Trek: Discovery.”
For movies, the better-known movies were “The Recruit” and “Captain Marvel.”
He loved his role in “Star Trek,” trying to bring a new perspective to the Klingon race in the show.
On his character in “Star Trek,” he stated, "Whether someone is good or bad is all about perspective, and it’s about understanding that culture.
“You’ll get to know the Klingons on our show, and then people can decide if we really are the villains."
Rest in peace, sir, for you were taken far too soon.
