Say what you want about Speaker McCarthy (R-CA) as a party leader or a politician in general, but the man knows how to raise money.
So far this year, McCarthy has raised $62 million to help the GOP expand the House majority.
He pulled in $21.7 million in the second quarter, which is more than Ron DeSantis made for his presidential run, reported The Gazette.
Big Money
McCarthy has always had the gift of being able to fundraise ridiculous amounts of money. The fact his numbers are rivaling presidential candidates should tell you something.
The Republican Speaker celebrated the big number by touting the idea that Republicans are looking very good to expand the House majority in 2024.
He stated, “As we continue to build on the historic successes of this Republican majority the campaign to protect and expand the House majority is gaining momentum. … Over the past six months, we have delivered historic spending cuts, worked to defend the border, and continued to investigate the Biden administration’s detrimental actions to the American public.
“The American people are responding to these accomplishments with an outpouring of support to advance this mission, and we plan on delivering for the country,” reported Breitbart.
McCarthy also took a moment to stroke Trump a bit, stating, “As usual, the media is attempting to drive a wedge between President Trump and House Republicans as our committees are holding Biden’s DOJ accountable for their two-tiered levels of justice.
“The only reason Biden is using his weaponized federal government to go after President Trump is because he is Biden’s strongest political opponent, as polling continues to show.
“Just look at the numbers this morning — Trump is stronger today than he was in 2016.”
McCarthy better keep sucking up to Trump because he has made some moves that Trump has vocally opposed, most notably the recent budget.
Trump has continued to stand by McCarthy, even after audio dropped of McCarthy being very critical of Trump during the January 6 riot at the Capitol. McCarthy has been given a much longer leash than other Trump allies, and it has puzzled the Trump faithful, as well as frustrated them that Trump continues to keep McCarthy and Senator Graham (R-S.C.).
My guess here is that Trump keeps McCarthy around because of his fundraising ability and Trump knows that come the general election, all those big-money PACs that are behind McCarthy will be behind him.
