Speaker Johnson Demands All Administration Records Preserved
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has just made a demand of the Biden administration that might be a sign of things to come.
Johnson has sent a notification to the entire administration that all records and communications from this administration must be preserved.
My guess here is that Johnson will have someone scour through the documents to see if any crimes were committed or if the administration was trying to cover something up on the way out the door.
No Burn Bags
Once Biden leaves office, there will be a quest for transparency over the controversial actions of this administration.
At the top of that list is going to be the Afghanistan withdrawal.
Next up will be any communications between the DOJ and prosecutors who were going after Trump outside of Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Records are supposed to be preserved anyway, but we all know how that works.
Johnson’s letter demanding the document preservation, in part, stated, “As we begin preparation for a new Trump Administration and new Congress, we fully expect your cooperation in a smooth transition of power.
“To that end, it is imperative that during the transition you comply with all statutory record retention requirements, including but not limited to the Federal Records Act. In addition to compliance with federal record retention laws, we are also expressly directing that all necessary steps be taken to preserve relevant Department documents and communications.”
The letter concluded, "In the waning days of this Congress, House Committees will continue to seek compliance with many of the subpoenas with which you largely declined to cooperate.
“Likewise, as the 119th Congress begins, the Committees may determine that it is necessary to reissue certain subpoenas as they continue with their oversight efforts.”
While I surely want to see any corruption exposed, I hope the House does not become obsessed with this like it did last term.
With Dems having the Senate and White House, there was no way the GOP could get its legislation passed and signed.
This term will be different, and the House needs to concentrate on legislation and put the rest of this on the back burner for busy work when it is slow.
