Speaker Johnson Cleans Up Comments on CHIPS Act Repeal
Last week, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) created quite a buzz when he stated that the GOP could move to repeal the CHIPS Act if they hold the House.
After Trump talked unfavorably about the legislation, Johnson was asked if he would try to repeal it, and he responded, “I expect that we probably will, but we haven’t developed that part of the agenda yet.”
This is a legacy piece of legislation for Biden, so Harris was quick to attack, which led to Johnson backtracking a bit on his statement.
Kamala Outraged
As noted above, after Johnson made his statement, Dems started to freak out, and this included Haris.
After the pushback, Johnson was asked again about repealing the legislation, and he changed his tune.
He responded, “No. Obviously, the CHIPS Act is hugely impactful here.
“My job is to keep lobbying on my side. That’s why I crossed the aisle and supported many things against leadership. But that’s our partnership, that’s how we’re going to get through it.”
This came after Rep. Brandon Williams (R-N.Y.) reached out to Johnson on the matter, as someone’s stuck in a nasty race and likely to lose his seat to a Democrat already.
New York has benefitted heavily from this legislation, so Williams being upset was understandable.
Williams also addressed this, stating, “I spoke privately with the Speaker immediately after the event. He apologized profusely, saying he misheard the question. He clarified his comments on the spot and I trust local media to play his full comments on supporting repatriation of chips manufacturing to America.”
Kamala Harris pounced on this opportunity, stating, “Let’s be clear why he walked it back. Because it’s not popular.
“And their agenda is not popular.”
This is yet another unforced error by the GOP, and the House has made quite a few of them not only during this election cycle, but throughout the last two years.
It is exactly why I believe the Dems will wind up taking the House, all but nullifying the chances of Trump being able to move ahead in any way with his agenda if elected.
