Smith Hits Trump Co-defendant in Mar-a-Lago Documents Case

Special Counsel Jack Smith has a new target to spew his venom toward in the Donald Trump classified documents case.

One of Trump’s co-defendants in the case, Waltine (Walt) Nauta, has made some statements that Smith believes are false.

Smith ripped Nauta in a recent court filing, claiming his statements are false and should be ignored.

It’s Fake News

Nauta has been charged by Special Counsel Jack Smith with conspiracy to commit obstruction, making false statements to the FBI, and withholding documents.

If you recall, Nauta was a Mar-a-Lago staffer who was caught on videotape in a plan to allegedly delete surveillance tapes at Mar-a-Lago regarding the alleged hiding of classified documents by Trump.

According to Nauta, the charges against him should be dismissed, claiming that he is being targeted for prosecution due to government “hostility” toward him because he did not cooperate with investigators.

Smith fired back at Nauta’s allegations, calling them “baseless,” “completely false,” and “deeply flawed.”

Smith’s filing stated, “Nauta waited two weeks to file a five-page response informing the court and the government that he does not object to the government’s request for a substitute response.

“Nauta admits that his vindictive and selective prosecution application did not mention the (false) factual allegations made in his reply.

“Nor does he deny that he could have made these allegations and arguments in his vindictive and selective prosecution application – on the contrary, he suggests that it was appropriate to leave these allegations and arguments out of his application and instead include them in his prosecution response for the first time because he had brought these allegations to the surface months earlier in independent filings with the court.”

Smith goes on to accuse Nauta of purposely trying to delay the case by submitting last-minute motions that would, in essence, create purposeful delays while the court gives prosecutors the opportunity to respond.

Smith’s motion concluded, “To ensure that these delaying tactics do not continue and reoccur, the Court should disregard the new allegations and arguments in Nauta’s response and deny his vindictive and selective motion to prosecute the documents.

“Alternatively, the court should grant the government’s unanimous motion for leave to file a substitute response.”

Smith has been extremely frustrated in the case, so it is no surprise to see him anxious to get this into the courtroom.

Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump-appointed judge, has been the only “friendly” judge Trump has encountered in his civil and federal indictments. There are rumors floating around that Smith could be close to filing to have her removed from the case due to his frustrations over her rulings and the fact that so many of her rulings have been overturned by the appellate court.
