Smith Cases Cost Taxpayers $50 Million
A report is breaking that is going to infuriate most of the right in this country.
Special Counsel Jack Smith’s cases against Trump reportedly cost about $50 million.
That is $50 million that is about to be flushed the moment Smith drops the cases against Trump.
All for Nothing
Smith had the two cases that had the most bite against Donald Trump for various reasons.
First, contrary to what Trump says, he did not have immunity in these cases.
There is simply no way that all of the charges would have been dropped on this basis because the cases had nothing to do with official actions of a president.
I have always thought that the January 6 case and the classified documents case were going to be a real problem for Trump, but his legal team was masterful in creating delays that kept the cases out of the courtroom before the election.
Now that the election is over and Trump won, Smith is between a rock and a hard place.
A sitting president cannot be tried in federal court, so, at the very least, Smith would have to put these cases on the backburner until 2029, and he does not seem willing to do that.
Smith has already made some moves that make it appear he will soon be dropping the charges.
That, however, does nothing to recover the reported $50 million these cases cost the American taxpayer.
Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani put it very bluntly, stating, "Ultimately, Smith's prosecutions were a waste of taxpayer money.
"He got nowhere near trial on either case, and the election fraud indictments didn't reveal significantly more evidence than the January 6 Committee."
Attorney John Perlstein added, "Government resources should be allocated more effectively, and I say this from the standpoint of someone who is not a supporter of Mr. Trump.
"All of those cases never made any sense to me. And now that they will seemingly be going away, that money was wasted."
For me, the fact that Smith is willing to give up the cases tells us everything that we need to know.
The point is, this just makes it clearer than ever that these cases were brought solely to try to keep Trump out of the White House. Since they failed, what is the point of going forward?
